Chloe Martin – European Laser Radial Youth Girl Champion

Chloe Martin, returning from being part of the overall winning British Sailing Youth Team at the ISAF Youth Championships in Denmark, put in a stunning individual performance to win the European Girls Laser Radial Youth Championship 2008 at Douarnenez, France last week, 24th July – 1st August.
Chloe, who is part of the P&O Ferries Talented Athlete Scheme, sailed consistently all week with only one result out of the top ten. She started with a fifth and a first on day one in gentle breezes and was disappointed when the race officer abandoned day two when similar wind was too unstable to set a course.
Day 3 was breezier and saw her achieving an amazing performance in pulling back a 100 meter deficit down wind lead to pip Anina Takala, from Finland, on the line to achieve her second bullet of the regatta and lay second overall to Mathilde De Kerangat of France who finished 4th in the recent Radial Youth World Championships.
With increasing wind strengths, Days 4 and 5 saw Chloe holding onto her lead with a 2nd, 7th, 1st and 7th, but with only a slender 2 point margin over Sarah Gunni, from Denmark, who finished 3rd in the Radial Youth World Championships.
The final day saw the wind at its heaviest during the regatta, blowing between 15 and 20 knots. Chloe, one of the lighter sailors in the fleet, responded to the pressure by finishing 3rd in race 9, thus winning the regatta and becoming European Champion with a race to spare, since Sarah Gunni finished 13th. With the pressure off in race 10, Chloe started well and rounded the first mark first; however, she was eventually passed by Gunni who finished in 2nd place overall, 9 points behind Chloe.
